Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a severe condition that happens in a vein situated deep within the body when a blood clot forms. A blood clot is a blood clump that has been transformed into a stable state. The clot blocks a vein, preventing blood from properly circulating in your body, and may occur for several reasons such as injury, surgery, inactivity, or reduced mobility. Certain medications have also been known to cause DVT.
Deep vein blood clots typically form in your thigh or lower leg, but they can also develop in other areas of your body. Other names associated with this condition may include thromboembolism, post-thrombotic syndrome, and postphlebitic syndrome.
PREVENTION OF DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS
Contractions induced by Electrical Stimulation have been shown to activate the skeletal muscle pump, promote limb blood flow, and may be effective for reducing venous pooling stasis and oedema. Therefore, Ultratone Stimulation may reduce the incidence of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism during and following surgery. A small portable stimulator may also be used during a long-haul flight. (*28)
The pad placements illustrated will stimulate circulation in the legs by alternately stimulating agonist and antagonist muscle groups, as this has been found to be an effective way to reduce the risk of thrombosis (*29). Turn up the intensity dials until a smooth tensing is felt.
